542 제주4·3유적 Ⅰ_ 제주시편 태를 소재로 하여 씌어진 현기영의 소설 『순이삼촌』의 문학비도 이곳에 세워졌다 늦게나마 이곳에 위령성지를 조성하여 억울하게 가신 영령들을 위로하며, 대참 사의 진상을 잊지 않기 위하여 역사의 산 교육장으로 삼고자 한다. 서기 2007년 음력 12월 19일 제주4·3 북촌리 희생자 유족회 일동 (영문) Neobeunseung-i Bukchon-ri the Site of the Jeju April 3rd Massacre Here in Neobeunsung-i, on the lunar calendar date of December 19, 1948, the horrific genocide of innocent civilians was undertaken by South Korean army. Even infants were sacrificed that day. The incident began with the death of two government soldiers by guerrilla attack. Twenty-three young men of the People's Security Forces were killed in Naensibile on the lunar calendar date of November 16, 1948. About one month later, as mentioned above, in retaliation for two soldier's death the military burned the entire village and killed more than three hundred inhabitants. The death toll of residents was four hundred and forty three during this suppression. On January 12, 2000, the Korean government enacted a special law related to the Jeju April 3rd incident. On October 31, 2003, President Roh Moo-Hyun officially apologized to the people of Jeju for the mas- sacre. With government assistance, a memorial for the victims of this mas- sacre was erected.
